Summary

 

After the Civil War, the United States experienced rapid industrial growth. As businesses increased in size and power, workers organized to demand better conditions. Cities grew rapidly, leading to new challenges and a new way of life. Also at this time, millions of new immigrants came to the United States seeking freedom and economic opportunities. In the United States, education became more widely available and many states made education for children compulsory. Education served as a way to introduce immigrants and their children to the English language and to American culture. A more literate American public led to a boom in the publication of books and newspapers.
