Today’s readings are the midway point in our Lenten journey, and today’s readings are all about the great journey of the Jewish people out of Egypt—the Exodus. For many of us, the story of the Exodus is embedded in our psyche from stories we heard as children or movies we might have seen. When we think of the Exodus, we may imagine Moses parting the Red Sea, the burning bush, or the famous cry, “Let my people go!” Particularly in this week’s second reading, St. Paul gives us a crash course on what the Exodus story has to do with Christians. He says that all of the generation that was released from slavery in Egypt saw the amazing works of God. Unfortunately, most of them fell away from their faith. Perhaps we’ve heard the saying “to whom much is given, much is required.” The Exodus generation was given many gifts, which made the consequences all the more dire when they fell into great sin. Like that generation, we, as Christians, have been given a lot: the Church, the Sacraments, and the Holy Scriptures. Paul is warning us that we must not presume that because we have these gifts we’re home free.
Sunflowers for Ukraine Please send in donations for our Sunflowers for Ukraine Project. The money collected is going to the Catholic Relief Services for Humanitarian aid. For $1.00 your child’s name will be written on a sunflower decoration and displayed in our “Sunflower Garden” in the main hallway. Each sunflower will represent shelter, hot meals, hygiene supplies, fuel to keep warm, transport to safe areas, counseling, and our prayers for the millions of refugees. This week the morning announcements will include the following prayer:
God of Peace and Justice, We pray for the people of Ukraine today. We pray for peace. We pray for all those in harm's way, that your Spirit of Comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with the authority over nations, for wisdom, discernment, and compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for your precious children at risk, that you will hold and protect them in the palms of your loving hands. We pray this in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Amen.
