St. Agnes Cathedral School: A Vibrant Faith Community Committed to Excellence in Catholic Education.
When St. Agnes Cathedral School opened its doors to over 680 students in September, 2017, it did so for the one hundreth year. Founded in 1917 by five Amityville Dominican Sisters, the original school was located on Quealy Place in what is now the grassy area between the Cathedral and the Rectory. In the late 1950's, the Parish purchased the Clinton Avenue School from the Rockville Centre Public School District. Built in 1896,the main building was one of the original public schools in Rockville Centre. The two wings were subsequently added in the 1960's. Thirty-two classrooms eventually accommodated 1600 students!
Throughout its history St. Agnes Cathedral School has striven to create and foster an environment in response to the call of the mission of the Church: to proclaim the message of Jesus, to participate in worship, to build a faith community and to respond in service to others.
In spite of radical educational changes, St. Agnes Cathedral School has never deviated from its commitment to academic excellence and meeting the divergent learning styles and needs of its K-8 students. The challenging, sequentially developed curriculum is based upon the mandates of New York State and the Diocese of Rockville Centre Education Department.
Rapidly changing technology has impacted the educational programs at St. Agnes. Each classroom, in addition to the art room, library, and computer lab is now equipped with a smartBoard. This effort was funded by the Mothers and Fathers Clubs.
Administrative tasks are also driven by Internet based technology. The school uses Power School and SchoolMessenger for web sites, e-mail and a host of other functions.
The spiritually rich and academically challenging programs are balanced by opportunities for the students to participate in after school enrichment programs. Middle Level sports include interscholastic basketball, softball, baseball, soccer, and volleyball teams. In recent years, Middle Level drama clubs have presented Fiddler on the Roof, Guys and Dolls, Cinderella, Oklahoma, and The Wizard of Oz to the delight of senior citizen groups, parents, and fellow students.
As a faith community, St. Agnes Cathedral School depends upon the support and involvement of the clergy, parents, and parishioners. We are grateful to Msgr. Koenig and the priests who visit and work with the students throughout the course of the school year. Words cannot express our thanks to the Mothers and Fathers Clubs, the Parent School Association and theSchool Board for all they contribute to the life of the school.
The St. Agnes School community is looking forward to an exciting, challenging, and growth filled second century of educating God's greatest gift, our children!
