We begin the season of Lent by joining Jesus in the desert where he is tempted by the devil. Satan tempts Jesus in three ways, which represent the same three tactics he commonly employs today to get us to break our relationship with God. First, Satan tries to undermine Jesus’ identity as the Son of God. He does the same thing with us—he tries to undermine our dignity and identity as sons and daughters of God. Second, Satan offers Jesus the kingdoms of the world. Satan tempts us too to seek power and influence in this world in order to further enslave us in an endless quest for control. Finally, Satan tempts Jesus to fulfill his mission in a way other than the one ordained by the Father. In the same way, we are often tempted to find an easier or more “successful” way to live our lives, instead of trusting the Father’s plan. Jesus answers Satan in all three of these temptations with the Word of God because God’s Word has power to resist and overcome evil. That is one reason why it is so important to become steeped and grounded in Scripture: in order to have a ready sword of truth which we can use to defend ourselves against the lies and snares of evil. Let us join Jesus in the desert in this week’s Gospel reading and learn how we can better resist the temptations of the devil in our own lives today.
Congratulations to our 8th graders who received the sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday, March 5th. It was so beautiful to witness the 8th graders profess their faith and be completely initiated into the Catholic faith. I was truly moved to tears. May the Spirit of the Lord dwell in their hearts all the days of their lives!

Lent offers us all a very special opportunity to grow in our relationship with God and to deepen our commitment to a way of life, rooted in our baptism. In our busy world, Lent provides us with an opportunity to reflect upon our patterns, to pray more deeply, experience sorrow for what we've done and failed to do, and to be generous to those in need. As we fast, give alms and pray, we are led to show love for others who lack the basic essentials for life. It is through these actions that we are led to transformation. This year's school-wide Lenten project is underway. It is based on the school’s themeWe Follow the Son. Each grade will perform an act of kindness. They will write their act of kindness on the Sunflowers that will be on display by the cross in the school’s main hallway. Here is a sneak peek at what the grades are planning:
Kindergarten will learn some songs to sing to spread happiness.
First Grade will learn a new prayer this Lenten season (5 finger prayer)
Second Grade will write letters to refugees from Ukraine.
Third Grade will be adopting an African Elephant and donating money to the World Wildlife Fund to support the well-being of all of God's creatures.
Fourth Grade will shell out kindness by painting shells and inscribing them with positive messages and placing them throughout the school and town.
Fifth Grade will aid The Little Shelter in Huntington, NY. The Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center is a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter. Students will donate items from the shelter's wish list and work as a team to organize the collection.
Sixth Grade will work with Love, Nana. Love, Nana is a Community Service Project presented by the Backyard Players and Friends. They are a volunteer & donation-based non-profit whose mission is two-fold, to assist local families in need by providing gently used clothing for newborns and creating an inclusive job training and life skills program for our participants.
Grade 7 will walk for water. They will be sponsored for walking laps around the Field of Dreams and donate the money earned to the Water for South Sudan Project.
Eighth Grade will give up their snacks at lunchtime. The money earned by giving up snacks will be donated to a charity the students will vote upon next week.
Sunflowers for Ukraine: Did you know that the sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine? It is fitting for us to embrace this beautiful symbol to send aid to Ukraine as it is our symbol to remember to follow the Son. We will shine our love and support for the people of Ukraine by selling paper sunflowers. Each paper sunflower sold will be displayed in the main hallway. Your family name will be written on the sunflower. The money collected will be donated to the Catholic Relief Services and their efforts to provide safe shelter, hot meals, hygiene supplies, transport to safe areas, and counseling support to families forced to flee their homes. Please send in your $1.00 donation Wednesday, March 9th- Wednesday, March 16th. Please keep the people of Ukraine in your thoughts and prayers.
