The New York State learning standards for Languages Other Than English form the basis for the Spanish program. The basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are presented.
In addition, the program fosters an awareness of and appreciation for Hispanic culture.
The study of Spanish begins in grade 7 and continues in grade 8. The program is designed so that, upon graduation, the 8thgrade students will have completed one full year of Spanish.
A variety of audio and visual materials are incorporated into the program. At the end of grade 8 the students are administered the New York State Second Language Proficiency examination.
